Today 365 Ideas for Office 365 is continuing in PowerPoint, but definitely breaking from the #OnlyinPowerPoint segment, because I totally first saw this in Google Slides. In fact Tony Vincent deserves 100% of the credit, as far as I know. But Tony’s a great example of how, if you are an educational blogger, and you are doing creative, cool new things, most likely you are writing about how to do things with Google, not Microsoft. And every once in a while (especially in Sheets), you have to be in Google, because the Microsoft version doesn’t do that. But the vast majority of the time, you can do it in Microsoft, too. In fact, there are a lot more things you can’t do with Google tools that Microsoft Office can do, or if you can, Microsoft has a lot more features. So after a 10-day hiatus to visit Hawaii (don’t be jealous), let’s get back into this!
Today’s Idea is to create personalized sticky notes in PowerPoint.
This works best on the desktop version, because you can be very precise when sizing your shapes.
Start with a new presentation. I like to start with a blank slide. Click on the dropdown under New Slide and choose Blank.

You can then delete the first slide.
Before you go any further, we need to change the size of our slide to match a sheet of paper.
On the ribbon, click on “Design”, then on “Slide Size” (like we did in yesterday’s post.) Choose “Custom Slide Size”

In the window that pops up, click on the drop-down under “Slides sized for” and choose Letter Paper (8.5×11 in), then click on the radio button for Portrait under Orientation- Slides.

On the ribbon, click on “Insert”, then the dropdown for “Shapes”. Choose a rectangle. Click on the rectangle, and then on “Format” in the ribbon.
On the far-right, find “size” and type 3″ for both height and width.

Now click on shape fill and choose “No fill”

Now click and drag the square to the top-left area of your slide.
Now copy and paste the square twice, so you have three identical squares.
Drag one square to the bottom of the page (to spread them out). Don’t worry about lining them up. We’ll do that the easy way.
Click and drag over all three squares, so they are all selected.
Click on “Format” I the ribbon, then the dropdown next to “Align”.
First click on “Align left”, then on “Distribute vertically”.
Here’s all of those steps:

You can also click on “Group” to keep them together in relation to each other. Now copy and paste the group of three . Drag the new group to the right. You can use the alignment tools again, but since it is only 2 (sets of) shapes, I just use the dotted lines that show up on screen to align the new column next to the original column

Now, right-click on the slide and choose “Duplicate Slide”
At this point, I would save the slide show and name it something like “Sticky Notes template”.
Send just Slide 1 to the printer.
Then place a 3″x3″ sticky note in each of the boxes, making sure the adhesive edge is in the top of each box. You will be sending this sheet, with the sticky notes attached, back through the printer soon, so you want to be sure that side goes through first.
(If you aren’t sure which way you paper feeds through, open the paper drawer a couple of inches, and draw an “x” on the paper on top. Print a page. When you pick up the printed page, look at where the side with the “X” is, and determine which end feeds through first- the one at the front or the back of the paper tray- and which side- the top or bottom as it lays in the paper tray- gets printed on. When you lay the paper with the sticky notes into the printer tray, make sure the side with the sticky notes is on the side that will get printed, and that it feeds through the edge with the adhesive first.)
On page 2, inside each 3″x3″ box, put in whatever content you want on your sticky notes. It can be typed, drawn, or a picture (or combination of them). Consider a To-Do list, checklist, behavior checklist, proofreading checklist, exit ticket, brainstorming page, a way of assigning groups, etc.
You an put something different in each square, or, you can copy/paste your creation form one square to the other 5 if you want the same thin on each sticky note.
When you have filled in the squares in slide 2, place the paper with the sticky note correctly in the printer, and print just page 2.
After you have successfully printed a page, if you want to do more, you can print multiple copies of page 1, attach the sticky notes, then print multiple copies of page 2.
Even as we move further and further into digital tools and become more and more paperless, I still have a hard time imagining that we will outgrow the usefulness of sticky notes anytime soon!
