This is one every pastor needs to know about. Placing text on top of a picture in PowerPoint is usually a pretty straightforward process. Choose white text for a dark background and black text for a light background. But what if you have a good reason to choose a specific color that’s not particularly light or dark, or your background picture had light parts and dark parts? How can you add text, large enough to read at a distance (i.e. you can’t just squeeze it into the light part of the picture). Furthermore, what if you want people to see what is behind the text box? Add a shape. Let’s keep it simple. Click on Insert on the ribbon, then shapes, then choose a rectangle.

Click and drag on your slide to add the rectangle. Remember what we did with the speech bubble the other day? Click on the rectangle, then Format. Instead of clicking on “Shape Fill” and choosing a light or dark color, just click on the white or black shape style.
This has the added benefit of automatically making the text the opposite (light/dark).
Right-click on the shape, and click on “Format Shape”
In the box that opens to the right, change the transparency to 50%.
Double-click on the shape to type in it. You’re probably done, but if you are not happy with how easy it is to read the text, you can also select the text and then click on Text Outline, also under the Format menu in the ribbon. This will make the text pop out more.
Editing Text Format
The reason it needs to pop out more, though is that the text, like the shape, is 50% transparent. So if you prefer, instead of double-clicking in the shape to type the text, you can choose
Click Insert, then Text Box.
Click and drag over the shape to create a text box directly over the shape.
Type you r desired text in the text box. You will need to choose what color you want that text to be.
If you want, you can then click and drag over both the shape and the text box to select them both, click on the Home tab, then the “Arrange” button, and click on “Group”. This will keep the text box and the shape together if you need to move them, but it makes it harder to edit the text, so you can ungroup them later (same steps) if you need to make changes.
Transparent Text Boxes
As long as you also pay attention to text size, you text should now be legible regardless of what colors they are placed upon.
