Add-ins are additional tools that you can add to a program to give it new superpowers. Or at least new features. Welcome to Day 37 of 365 Ideas for Office 365. We’ve been looking at how to create comic strips and storyboards in PowerPoint. We’ve gone over the basic process, but there is an add-in that really adds to the experience. Since we’ve never looked at add-ins here, we’re taking a detour today.
To find Add-ins for PowerPoint, click on Insert on the ribbon, where you will find an Add-ins section.
Accessing Add-ins via the Insert tab
There are two buttons here- Get Add-ins and My Add-ins. We will click on Get Add-ins, because if you already have acquired some, you are reading the wrong blog post today. (OK, you may actually have some “Admin Managed Add-ins that were provided to you.) This opens the Office Store. There is an education section that’s worth looking through, as well as a productivity category.
Office Add-Ins in the Office Store
Some add-ins allow you to poll your audience. (Mentimeter is one such add-in.)
Selecting and Adding an Add-In
The one we’ll look at today is a PhET Sims. Type “PhET” in the Search box. “PhET” should pop up. Click on the “Add” button next to it. This will not only add it to your add-ins, but it will also open it in a window on the right. From now on when you want to access this on this computer, you can click on Insert and choose “My Add-ins” instead of “Get Add-ins”. This only adds it to this device, and only for the user that added it. If you go to a different device, or someone else logs into that computer, it will not be under “My Add-ins”. Explore other add-ins in the store and see what else might be useful. Tomorrow I’ll share my favorite!
